Vitebsk State Medical University (BGMU)

Classes are organized into 58 departments, which employ 60 doctors and up to 181 candidates of sciences, including 39 professors and 145 associate professors.

To improve the quality of teaching, an educative-industrial pharmacy, dental clinic, and control-analytic laboratory were created where students are able to put their knowledge into practice.

There is a wonderful library at the university, available to each student and holding a large number of volumes in all branches of knowledge written in both Russian and foreign languages.

Universities place free sports facilities and libraries at the students’ disposal which encourages their creative activities. After university graduation, young specialists have an opportunity to continue postgraduate education. Here, training of the scientific personnel with highest qualifications is conducted with granting scientific degrees of Candidate of Science. Establishments providing postgraduate education include higher educational establishments (regardless of pattern of ownership), scientific and other organizations entitled to engage in postgraduate education in accordance with established procedure. Regardless of pattern of ownership and departmental affiliation, all higher educational establishments are subordinate to the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus.

Foreign Students

International students obtain their higher education in universities, academies and institutes that are not only accredited, but also have a special license to teach foreign students. International students are not obliged to start their study with the preparatory year.

Accommodation

The preparatory faculty is a special educational program with duration of 1 academic year (7-10 months). At the preparatory faculty students study Russian language and special disciplines required depending on the future specialty chosen (language of science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, geography, history, and literature). After completing the preparatory faculties the student sits an examination. In case of a successfully passing the examination, the student receives the Certificate of completion of the preparatory faculty. This certificate gives the student a right to enter any Belarusian university without entrance examinations. But if the student chooses to study in English language, he/she does not need to study at the preparatory faculty, he enters directly the first year of the degree course. Studying at the preparatory faculty starts from the first week of September every year depending on the formation of groups.

When is the beginning of vacations in the Universities in Belarus?
At the preparatory faculty, the program of study is not divided into semesters; therefore winter vacations are not stipulated. At the end of January the students who have successfully passed all tests have one week of rest. Students who have academic debts try to pass through their tests again. Summer vacations last 2 months, from July, 1st till August, 31st every year. As for the degree course (6 years), winter vacations last 2 weeks from the last week of January till the first week of February every year. Summer vacations are the same as at the preparatory faculty — from July, 1st till August, 31st every year.
